THEATRE BIO

Since 1980, Warren Sulatycky has been an international multi-disciplinary theatre creator, writer, and visual/media artist professionally writing, directing, producing, designing, and performing in theatre productions in New York, Los Angeles, and major cities across Canada. He is the artistic director and founder of Renaissant Arts, an international interdisciplinary arts company spanning theatre, film/video, visual arts, spoken word, music and cross-cultural multidisciplinary live installations. He most recently workshopped his latest solo performance theatre work, "My Sacred Heart", at the Artscape Gibralter Point Centre for the Arts, Toronto, Ontario.  His latest multi-character play "Angel" was workshopped at Toronto's Tarragon Theatre with David Ferry, Irene Poole, and Mike Shara, for a Renaissant Arts production in 2017/18. 

In New York, through Renaissant Arts, Warren executive produced and starred in the off-Broadway run of Canadian Governor-General nominated play “Trout Stanley” at the Culture Project, Manhattan. A New York Times critically acclaimed production. From 2004 to 2008, as founder and artistic director of Renaissant Arts Manhattan, Warren maintained a New York-based multi-disciplined company with a gallery, studio and development space in Soho, Manhattan. Renaissant focused on presenting the works of Canadian and American theatre, film, music and visual artists including the New York Premiere of Jason Sherman’s “After the Orchard”. Renaissant hosted the highly successful monthly “Soho Art Salon” where new works-in-development in theatre, film, spoken word, video art, music and the visual arts were presented, including original material for Woody Allen’s New York production of “Murder Mystery Blues.” As an actor Warren participated in the workshop development of “Moloch and Other Demons” by Jason Grote at Playwrights Horizon, New York.  He is an alumnus of both the Lincoln Center Directors Lab and the Pasadena Playhouse Directors Lab West.

In Los Angeles, at the Lillian Theatre, Warren developed, directed, and co-created the collective creation “Road” for theatre and eventual filming. At Ex Machina, Robert Lepage’s theatre in Quebec City, Warren created and directed “Terre”, in addition to serving as a director’s observer to Robert Lepage on his tour of “Geometry of Miracles” to the Tramway Theatre in Glasgow Scotland, and the National Theatre in London.

In Canada, Warren directed and designed Governor General Award winner Vern Thiessen in Thiessen's sold-out three star reviewed one-man performance work "Bungalow" at the Manitoba Association of Playwrights.  Warren was a two-season company member and playwright-in-residence at the Blyth Theatre Festival (Ontario), where he was actor/co-creator on Paul Thompson’s “Death of a Hired Man”. At Buddies in Bad Times Theatre, (Toronto) he performed in “The Trials of John Demjanjuk”, “Megatrolopolis”, “Civilization of Shoeshine Boy” (Ken MacDougall, director), and directed Gil Garrett’s “Enter the Chicken”.  At the Factory Theatre, (Toronto), Warren was playwright-in-residence where his play “Babas” was developed and produced with Jackie Maxwell directing. “Babas” was subsequently produced at the Persephone Theatre, Saskatoon, with Tibor Fehereghazi directing. Warren was General Manager of the Toronto’s alternative theatre incubator The Theatre Centre from 1990 – 92, where he presented the seminal works of Daniel MacIvor (“Never Swim Alone”), Daniel Brooks, Sky Gilbert, Diane Flacks, and Darren O’Donnell. While at the Theatre Centre, he wrote, produced and acted in “The End of Love” (Ed Roy, Director), and presented his solo performance piece “Innocence Abroad” at the BANG series. In Edmonton, Warren was a company member of Stewart Lemoine’s Teatro La Quindicina where he originated roles in premiere productions of “My Miami Melody”, “Cocktails at Pam’s”, “Damp Fury”, and “The Vile Governess and Other Psychodramas” which toured to Toronto and garnered a best new production Dora Award. He was a two-year original cast member of the long-running live improv soap opera “East of Edson”. Other credits include performing in “Dogg’s Hamlet” at Theatre Calgary, “Waiting for Godot” at Studio Theatre (Edmonton),  “MacBeth”, “Romeo and Juliet” and “Hey Marilyn” (Citadel Theatre).  

Warren studied theatre at The National Theatre School of Canada (Montreal) and the University of Alberta (BA - Honours, English Literature). He has received awards and grants for his writing and creative projects from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, Alberta Media Fund, Telefilm Canada, The Canada Council, the Ontario Arts Council, the Toronto Arts Council, National Film Board, the OMDC, and the Laidlaw Foundation among others.

Warren has been a member of Canadian Actors Equity for over 40 years.

Warren has directed, produced, and written over 250 hours of television and is a Gemini (Canada's Emmy) nominee. As an actor he has guest starred and appeared in principle roles in television series and films.  In 2017, he wrote, produced, directed and acted in his first feature film, "April in Autumn".  For more on his media career, go to
